Bank Holiday Refuse collection changes Details refuse collection changes ( if any) are in the Whats New section . Please note that in 2013 refuse collections will continue on Bank Holidays so they will NOT be one day late . This Does not include Christmas 2013 . Details of changes for this will be placed on the site later in the year. Clinical Waste If you wish to have your garden waste collected by the domestic collection round, you must purchase Island Waste Services Garden Waste bags. The bags are available from Island Waste Services (please phone 821234) as well as Islandwide outlets such as libraries. Please note that green / garden waste sacks purchased in supermarkets will not be collected. If you have purchased Garden Waste bags please place them out for collection in your black sack week NOT the recycling week . Thank you Disposal of larger household items Engine Oil
If you are able to transport the appliance yourself it can be taken to any of the Island's three Civic Amenity sites ( see Civic Amenity sites for details of location and opening times). If you do not have transport you can phone the Council to request a collection. There will be a charge for this service. Thank you Trade Waste/Business enquiries Island Waste Services are mainly responsible for the collection, recycling and disposal of household waste. However, the company operate a service for the collection and recycling of commercial glass. Some commercial waste can be accepted at the Forest Road plant (cardboard, packaging and confidential waste), for details please telephone the Forest Road office 821234.
What can I take to a Civic Amenity Site ? Civic Amenity Sites There are three Civic Amenity Sites on the Island.
Lynnbottom Civic Amenity site, Briddlesford Road, Near Arreton PO30 2PD Open 7am - 10pm Summer, 7am - 7pm Winter (Summer and Winter time determined by the changing of the clocks) The site will accept bulky household wastes and has facilities for recycling: Metals, Glass bottles and jars, Engine oil, Car batteries, Textiles, Aluminium cans, White goods( washing machines, cookers), Garden waste, rubble, books, videos,CD's , mobile phones, Television and Computer monitors, fluorescent tubes, Domestic batteries, Electrical Equipment, wood.
Forest Park Civic Amenity site Forest Road, Newport PO30 5YS Open only at weekends 9.30am - 4.30pm The site will accept bulky household wastes and has facilities for recycling: Metal, Glass bottles and jars, Engine oil, Car batteries, Textiles, Aluminium cans, White goods, Garden waste, books, videos, Cd's , mobile phones and hand tools. Please note that there are steps to the garden waste container so please ensure you bring appropriate sized loads Monday–Friday from 8.30–11.30 and 15.00–16.30. Plasterboard must be clean with no tiles, artex or any other material attached. Please bring a utility bill or other such proof of residence and credit/debit card/ cheque book with you, even it is a small load. Loads under 60kgs are free and you are entitled to 2 free loads a year. If the load is over 60kg you will be charged for the whole load at a rate of 15p.kg plus vat. Please also note that only the weight on our weighbridge will be taken for charging purposes and this may differ from a weight at home so do not rely on this as a judgement for not having to pay. Asbestos — Please call the council on 01983 821000 for a permit. Once you have a permit you can bring the asbestos to Forest Road at the following times: Monday - Wednesday 8.30- 11.30 and 15.00 - 16.30

No Plasterboard or Asbestos can be accepted at this site. Please note that the access to some of the containers on this site is via steps so please bring appropriate sized loads.
What happens to my black sack waste ? The Resource Recovery Facility also extracts all the steel and aluminium that you place in your bin. These metals are squashed into bales and sent to the mainland for recycling. The facility cannot extract and recycle glass. What happens to the wheelie bin ( recycling ) waste
The vehicle collecting your recycling from your wheelie bin or clear sack deposits its load at a refurbished facility at the Lynnbottom site. The recycling is reloaded onto bulk containers and transported to a sorting facility on the mainland . Here, items such a plastic , glass , metal and different forms of paper and card are extracted either mechanically or by hand and sent to the relevant reprocessing facility. Where can I take old clothes and shoes ? Old clothes,shoes, belts and bags can be placed in the Textile Banks located in car parks throughout the Island. Please note that you can put any old /worn /torn clothing in a textile bank. It does not have to be reusable. In addition to the Textile banks located at recycling sites please do not forget local Charity Shops for the better quality unwanted items. The R.S.P.C.A. at Godshill may take some items of bedding such as blankets and towels. It is advisable to phone the RSPCA first to check suitablility of items tel: 01983 840287. ^ Back to top |
