Island Waste Services operate the Island's only non -hazardous landfill site at Standen Heath. This site was opened in April 2000.
Being an engineered and fully contained site means that Island Waste Services have applied the best environmental practice in its construction to ensure that the risks of contaminating adjacent land or water systems are eliminated. The base of the site is lined with a metre of compacted clay and then covered with a 2mm thick liner, this is protected by a geo membrane and a 1mm depth of stone in the base and the sides are protected by 300mm of sand. All areas are then covered with selected soft wastes. Once a specific cell has been filled with waste it is restored. This involves covering the waste with inert materials, a plastic ( high density polyethelene) liner and finally 660mm of soil , which is seeded. The former Lynnbottom landfill site is in the process of being restored to Heath land. Within a landfill site the breakdown of wastes can result in the production of contaminated water and methane.
