Disposable nappies now account for about 85 per cent of nappy changes in Britain, and provide a market worth over £500 million per year.
Over 3000 million are used per year, accounting for 3 to 4 per cent of household waste. Some are flushed down toilets, causing blocked household drains and maintenance problems at sewage treatment plants. But the majority are dustbin fillers, ending in landfill. The Isle of Wight Real Nappy Network Is a voluntary organisation of parents who have chosen to use real cotton nappies for their own babies. The Network aims to give impartial advice and assistance to all parents, health and childcare professionals, and waste management professionals who are interested in this important aspect of babycare. They work alongside other organisations campaigning to reduce waste and raise awareness about the real alternative to disposables. Times have changed! Modern cotton nappies are easy to use, easy to care for and attractive and stylish as well. Shaped nappies fasten with poppers or velcro. You don't even need pins for terries. Modern waterproof covers are made from soft fabrics and machine washable with your babies clothes. A nappy 'library' of over 20 different makes and styles is available for viewings to help you make your mind up! But isn't it all... well.. rather messy?! A biodegradeable liner catches the solid waste. Just drop the liner into the toilet and flush it away. It's quick and convenient - no nappies full of poo sitting in your rubbish for a week until the bins are collected! You don't even need to soak your nappies if you don't want to. A dry bucket or swing bin is fine. Washing - It's so easy! A machine wash at 60°C with non-biological detergent is all you need to keep nappies clean and hygienic: there's no sterilising and no boiling. Happy Parents! Using real cotton nappies for one baby can cost around £600 less than disposables, even taking washing costs into account - Use your cotton nappies for a second baby and save even more money. Happy Earth! Disposable nappies take far more of the earth's previous resources than cotton nappies. You can wash a cotton nappy 200 times with the amount of water needed to manufacture just one disposable nappy. Thousands of tonnes of plastic end up in landfill each year. The plastic could take 200-500 years to decompose fully.
