Quality & Environmental Accreditations

As part of Island Waste Services contract with Isle of Wight Council, the company is obliged to be ISO 9002, ISO 14001 and EMAS (European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) certified.

ISO 9002
Island Waste Services were recommended for accreditation for ISO 9002 on 11th November 1998. Since this time, an ongoing programme of both internal and external audits has taken place to ensure that the quality system is successfully operated.
Accreditation to the new standard ISO 9001:2000 was achieved in July 2005

ISO 14001
As part of attaining ISO 14001, Island Waste Services has produced an Environmental Policy that illustrates the Company's commitment to safeguarding the environment.
This policy is tied into a series of site-specific environmental aims and objectives, which need to be achieved within set timescales. ISO 14001 accreditation was achieved in December 1999. The environmental management system is audited on a six monthly basis.
The implementation of our Environmental Management System has required the identification of key environmental issues relevant to each of our operations and has helped to focus staff attention on the control and improvement of these environmental issues and risks.
Accreditation to the new standard ISO 14001:2004 was achieved in July 2005

Environmental Policy
Island Waste Services has a strong commitment to the prevention of pollution and the safeguarding of the environment in our everyday business activities.
To meet these commitments we have established an Environmental Management System to operate in accordance with environmental legislation and regulations and with ISO 14001.

Each facility operating within the Environmental Management System will, on a regular basis, review its activities for their effects on the environment and the local community in conjunction with Island Waste Services Environmental Action Plan and for continuing compliance with legislation. As a result of these reviews, objectives and targets will be established as part of a process of continual improvement of environmental performance.

To ensure the achievement of this policy, Island Waste Services has identified personnel within the company with the necessary responsibility, authority and resources to implement, manage and maintain the Environmental Management System.

As part of the partnership with the Isle of Wight Council and the community, Island Waste Services is charged with diverting as much waste as possible from landfill to more sustainable methods of waste disposal. This is captured in the company's slogan 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle'.

EMAS (European Eco - Management and Audit Scheme)
EMAS was established to improve the quality of environmental management throughout European industry, to help companies gain a competitive advantage from these improvements and to communicate their progress to the general public. The scheme is strongly supported by the UK government.

To register under EMAS a company must have a clearly defined strategy for environmental management complete with objectives and targets for continual improvement, and must publish extensive details of its environmental performance.
