THE RESOURCE RECOVERY FACILITY (RRF)

There are several aspects of the operation of the RRF that could have an impact upon the environment. These are water pollution, air pollution, noise, smell and pests.
With each of these issues a risk assessment has been undertaken and systems are in place to monitor and control all of these potential environmental hazards.

Water
There is no discharge to the foul sewer on the site (with the exception of the office block). All surface water is discharged via an interceptor to remove oil and grease traces oil then into the combined surface water drainage system.

Air pollution and smell
This is monitored regularly by the Environment Agency to ensure that all emissions comply with stringent EU set levels.
Odour eliminators are installed in the main reception hall.

Noise
Noise was found to be emitting from a particular area of the RRF and so additional soundproofing was installed.

Pests
Vermin are dealt with through a local pest control company.

Resources
The use of water, electricity and gas has been monitored on this site. The refurbishment of the plant during 2001 significantly reduced the amount of electricity and water used and eliminated the use of gas completely.
